What is Video SEO?

Video SEO is the optimization of video content to increase discoverability in the SERPs. Identifying video content by placing targeted keywords throughout a website page will optimize the page for search engines. This points to the location of the content for search bots.

Why are they important?

Video transcriptions are a textual representation of the content spoken in a video or audio file. Because search engines only crawl text, a transcription enables search engines to understand the subject matter of videos. Adding captions will also increase SEO. Caption files uploaded to YouTube are indexed by both Google and YouTube which will boost rank and allow for a higher placement within search results.

How do video transcriptions improve on-page SEO?

On-page SEO is defined by text elements on a page and are easily identified when viewing a webpage. Those elements include URL structure, page title, description, headers and also image alt text. These should all be created with a keyword phrase in mind. By adding transcriptions it is also adding to the keyword density on the page, or the number of times a targeted word is placed throughout the page. Reviewing your transcription can also help you determine which is the best keyword phrase to target as well.

How do I transcribe a video?

If you don’t want to take the time to write out the entire video transcription by yourself, I would recommend using a third-party platform called SpeechPad.  SpeechPad is a very easy to use tool that will transcribe your videos for just $1 per minute. Once they send you the text file of your video transcription the next step is adding that transcription file to YouTube.

Adding a video transcription can be a frustrating process.  Stay tuned for my next blog post where I will show you how to add your video transcription to your YouTube video.
